Late Pleistocene tephra deposits found from Sitka to Juneau and Lituya Bay are assigned to a source at the Mount Edgecumbe volcanic field, based on similarity of glass compositions to nearvent deposits and on thinning away from Kruzof Island. The sequence of near-vent layers is basaltic andesite and andesite at the base, rhyolite, and mixed dacite and rhyolite on top. The only breaks in the tephra sequence are two 1-mm-thick silt partings in a lake-sediment core, indicating a depositional interval from basaltic andesite to dacite of no more than about a millennium. Tephra deposits at sites >30 km from the vent are solely dacite and rhyolite and are 10,600 to 11,400 14C yr old based on interpretation of 18 radiocarbon ages, including 5 by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Basaltic andesite and andesite deposits nearer the vent are as much as 12,000 yr old.
Discrepancy among radiocarbon ages of upland tephra deposits provisionally correlated as the same grainfall is resolvable within ±2 σ of analytical uncertainty. Comparison of bulk and AMS ages in one sediment core indicates a systematic bias of +600 to +1100 yr for the bulk ages; correlation of tephra deposits among upland and lacustrine sites implies an additional discrepancy of 200–400 yr between upland (relatively too young) and lacustrine ages. In any case, the Mount Edgecumbe tephra deposits are a widespread, latest Pleistocene stratigraphic marker that serves to emphasize the uncertainty in dating biogenic material from southeastern Alaska.

Paleoenvironmental conditions are reconstructed from soils buried under volcanic ash ca. 21,500 years ago on the Seward Peninsula. Soil development was minimal, reflecting the continuous regional deposition of loess, which originated from river floodplains and the exposed Chukchi shelf. Cryoturbated soil horizons, ice wedges, and ice-lens formation indicate a permafrost environment and mean annual temperatures below −6° to −8°C. Shallow active layers (average 45 cm), minimal evidence for chemical leaching of soils, and the presence of earthen hummocks indicate a cold and seasonally dry climate. Neither steppe nor polar desert soils are appropriate analogues for these zonal soils of loess-covered central Beringia. No exact analogues are known; however, soils underlying dry tundra near the arctic coast of northern Yakutia, Russia, and under moist, nonacidic tundra of the Alaskan North Slope have properties in common with the buried soils.

Patients with predominantly unilateral parkinsonian signs may provide a unique opportunity to evaluate the cerebral representation of cognitive functions characteristically affected in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. Twenty hemiparkinsonian patients (ten left and ten right) and 10 healthy controls, matched for age and education, were studied with neuropsychological tests and positron emission tomography. Both right and left hemiparkinsonians evidenced impairments in visuospatial and verbal episodic memory function, but had no deficits in executive abilities, compared to controls. None of the neuropsychological test scores distinguished right from left hemiparkinsonians. Glucose metabolic profiles were identical for the three groups in all cortical areas assessed; in the subcortex however, lenticular hypermetabolism contralateral to the predominant side of motor involvement was evident in the left hemiparkinsonian group. Correlational analysis revealed that higher glucose metabolic rates in the basal ganglia of these hemiparkinsonians were associated with lower visuospatial test scores. In frontal and parietal cortex, decreasing glucose metabolism was positively associated with neurobehavioral function; in temporal cortex, measures of attention and memory decreased with increasing glucose metabolic rates.

Cognitive training improves mental abilities in older adults, but the trainability of persons with memory impairment is unclear. We conducted a subgroup analysis of subjects in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) trial to examine this issue. ACTIVE enrolled 2802 non-demented, community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older and randomly assigned them to one of four groups: Memory training, reasoning training, speed-of-processing training, or no-contact control. For this study, participants were defined as memory-impaired if baseline Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) sum recall score was 1.5 SD or more below predicted AVLT sum recall score from a regression-derived formula using age, education, ethnicity, and vocabulary from all subjects at baseline. Assessments were taken at baseline (BL), post-test, first annual (A1), and second annual (A2) follow-up. One hundred and ninety-three subjects were defined as memory-impaired and 2580 were memory-normal. Training gain as a function memory status (impaired vs. normal) was compared in a mixed effects model. Results indicated that memory-impaired participants failed to benefit from Memory training but did show normal training gains after reasoning and speed training. Memory function appears to mediate response to structured cognitive interventions in older adults. (JINS, 2007, 13, 953–960.)

Summary
Introduction
Down's syndrome (DS) occurs in about 1/800 live births (Adams et al., 1981) and accounts for about 17% of the mentally handicapped population (Heller, 1969). An association between DS and dementia was first noted well over a century ago by Fraser & Mitchell (1876), who wrote ‘in not a few instances, however, death was attributed to nothing more than a general decay – a sort of precipitated senility’. Nevertheless, it was not until much later (Struwe, 1929; Jervis, 1948) that the linkage between this ‘senile decay’ and the occurrence within the brain of the pathological lesions of Alzheimer's disease (AD), namely senile plaques (SP) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), was noted. More recently, a number of studies have shown there to be an excess of DS births among the relatives of AD patients, particularly early onset AD families (Heston et al., 1981; Heyman et al., 1983; Broe et al., 1990; Van Duijn et al., 1991). Conversely, there is an increased risk of AD among mothers of DS children (Yatham et al., 1988; Schupf et al., 1994). Such observations support the pathological observations of shared etiopathogenetic causes for AD and DS. Life expectancy for people with DS has progressively risen with nearly half individuals living to beyond 50 years of age (Dupont et al., 1986; Baird & Sadovnick, 1987; Holland & Moss 1997) and with this the problems of ‘precocious ageing’ and dementia in DS have gained prominence.

Background
Frontotemporal dementia accounts for up to 20% of cases of dementia in the presenium, yet remains poorly recognised. Diagnostic criteria have been devised to aid clinical diagnosis.
AimsTo provide an overview of clinical and pathological characteristics of frontotemporal dementia and its nosological status.
MethodsThe review summarises consensus diagnostic criteria for frontotemporal dementia and draws on the authors'clinical experience of 300 frontotemporal dementia cases, and pathological experience of 50 autopsied cases.
ResultsFrontotemporal dementia is characterised by pronounced changes in affect and personal and social conduct. Some patients also develop motor neuron disease. Mutations in the tau gene account for some but not all familial cases of frontotemporal dementia.
ConclusionsFrontotemporal dementia is a focal form of dementia, which is clinically and pathologically distinct from other dementias. It represents an important model for understanding the functions of the frontotemporal lobes.

The Reinke crystal is a distinctive feature of human Leydig cells of the adult maturation phase. This large subcellular structure, first described in 1896 by Reinke, has been well documented ultrastructurally by numerous investigators during the past few decades (e.g. Fawcett & Burgos, 1960; de Kretser, 1967; Sohval et al. 1973; Christensen, 1975; Kerr, 1991). Although Leydig cells of many mammals contain unusual inclusions, the Reinke crystal has long been considered unique to the human Leydig cell. Its precise molecular composition and significance are unknown. It is, however, known to contain proteins (Janko & Sandberg, 1970) and has been found to increase within the cell with age (Mori et al. 1978). The purpose of the present report is to describe the presence of an inclusion with much similarity to the Reinke crystal within Leydig cells of the marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus).
